should provide the leadership for state legislators throughout the country. president obama may be restricted in terms of what he can do by executive order but we are anxious to see what can be implemented by the executive branch and to realize that america, this is more in terms of common sense. when we have something that is hurting our children so much and killing youngsters around the country, it is time for all of the groups to come together and not to argue with each other because this is not constitutional rights. this is common sense. we know that those people that incorporated the right to bear arms was not talking about the slaughter of children that's happened in newtown, connecticut. so i am so sorry to see that the state legislator there that spoke earlier has made this a personal political issue, but i'm so proud that new york state has moved forward. >> if you're proud of what new york has done, obviously there's not going to be any perfect policy or perfect law that everybody's going to agree on from both sides saying that this is key perfection but do you think

i'm looking at is the country's expectations. when president obama was first inaugurated, he became -- and a lot of his staffers will tell you this -- sort of a victim of the high expectations that the public had for him. now the expectations are kind of lower, so the folks in the administration are saying, well, if the expectations are lower, maybe we can overperform a little instead of underperforming like people thought we did last time around. so they're kind of looking for the glass half full part of this. equation. >> one of the things going on beneath numbers indicates a sort of tsunami of hyperpartisanship that this administration has tried to operate in. it's a stark partisan divide. 76% of democrats thinks things are going well in the country. only 28% of republicans feel that way. so that is really a reminder of the divides at work. >> i think what we don't know right now, one of the big mysterie mysteries, is where this economy is truly going. we hear from a number of people like jamie dimon has been arguing, we get a grand bargain this economy will take off. a lot of pe

president obama has done for the progressive movement in this country in the democratic party. how can you not stand with him on this? how much more information do these lawmakers need? have we not covered it enough? other democratic senators with high ratings from the national rifle association have also refused to say if they support the president's package. max baucus of montana, senator heidi heitkamp of north dakota, senator johnson of south dakota. senator donnelley of indiana. senator begich of alaska, senator manchin of west virginia, senator tester of montana. however, senator mark warner spoke out in favor of the president's plan and said he believes it has bipartisan support. those senators all have a or a-plus ratings from the national rifle association. reid has a b rating. these senators know they will lose their high rating and maybe become a target with the nra if they vote for a sensible assault weapons ban. you see, we had the assault weapons ban back in 1994, but we're so screwed up in washington right now they're even afraid to go back to that. every senator should expl

that previous presidents did. what distinguishes what president obama did today is the breath of policy changes that he enacted. and, yes, on some access to some specific types of fire power in this country. but that is just one part of this very broad-based package of things. that is ground breaking today. it is the beth of what he has proposed. it is that he has gone wider than any other president, not that he has gone farther than any other president toward restricting certain guns, he has gone wider. now, many of the actions are being denounced as tyranny but they are reminding relevant stake holders in the country about laws that already exist. president will send an open letter to licensed gun dealers giving them guidance on how best to facility back grouchbd checks, if they choose to. the department of health and human services will provide a letter making sure that everyone knows that under existing law, mental health professionals can report people who may pose a direct and credible threat of violence. one of the president's axzs calls for a letter to remind everybody of that existing

. when president obama was inaugurated. first time, there was none of that certainty and expectation, right? the country and all of us were caught up in the historical enormity of the fact that the united states of america was about to swear in our first african-american president. and that eight years of republican administration under bush and cheney was coming to an end. that inauguration in 2009 was such a dramatic break from the past, toward a whole new future that i don't think anybody expects that we will have an inauguration quite as consequential as the last one. maybe ever again. but we now know, as part of the historical record, that while the whole country was marveling at the enormity of the transition we were making on inauguration night 2009 something else was going on that night in washington and it had a very different vibe. do not ask what good we do inside the u.s. house of representatives. it came out this past april. in the front line documentary that aired this week on pbs, they got everybody to go on record about this. lest you thought this was an apocylpitical
